John D’Agostino Educated at Northwestern University and the London International Film School, John started his career as a set photographer for the movie industry. Raised in an artistic environment - his grandfather a collector of antique art, his father an abstract collage painter, and his mother a dancer – living the life of an artist was never in doubt. Although photography is his medium, John thinks like a painter – as an artist first, a photographer second. John creates bold, haunting images of people and places out of the familiar. He approaches his subject matter with decisive composition, electric color, and a keen eye for the dramatic. Shooting is instinctual, with attraction only to the fundamentals of color, light and contrast. The creation of the work in postproduction is on an epic scale, with detailed and careful manipulation to create the inexpressible. D’Agostino’s passion for dynamic color and the interplay of light into shadow is influenced by the stained glass of Louis Comfort Tiffany, and the ways his rich colors illuminated the darkness. Other inspirations are Friedrich Nietzsche, Edward Hopper, Edgar Degas and Jackson Pollock.
